Guinness World Records presents Charles Martinet an award for voicing Mario

Nintendo’s most recognisable mascot might not have received a voice until years after his 8-bit debut, but the distinct styling of Charles Martinet has been a staple in the Super Mario series for 28 years. Guinness World Records has now honoured Martinet with his own certificate, claiming the title of “most recorded video game voice overs for a single character.”

The milestone is thanks to the release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which sees Martinet surpass his 100^th portrayal of Mario across a variety of video games. Although the category is limited to the one character, Martinet’s talents are also heard in Mario’s younger brother Luigi, their baby counterparts and evil doppelgangers Wario and Waluigi – who incidentally is still missing from the Smash roster, much to the dismay of fans.

This isn’t the first time that Mario has appeared in the record-tracking book, as both the Mario and Super Mario series lay claim as the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The red-capped plumber is also the longest-running, most successful and most recognisable character on the planet, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

KitGuru Says: Mario’s popularity hasn’t waned, with Nintendo undoubtedly laying the groundwork for his next adventure, wherever that may be. In the meantime, we can all appreciate Martinet’s talents when Luigi’s Mansion 3 drops for the Nintendo Switch next year.
