Sony decided to follow in Nintendo's footsteps this year and attempt to capture holiday season sales with the release of a mini-classic console. The PlayStation Classic's launch hasn't been the smoothest, the 20 pre-installed games didn't really live up to what many had hoped for and the $100 price tag appears to have had a significant impact on sales. Now that Christmas is over, Sony has already put a major price cut in place for the PlayStation Classic, bringing it down to a more reasonable $60.
As Kotaku points out, this 40% price reduction has taken effect at most online stores and at retail. For reference, Nintendo found success with the NES Classic at $60, while the SNES Classic pushed things up a bit to $80- a price tag that many were still willing to pay. Given that the PlayStation Classic hasn't really come close to completely selling out, it would appear that $100 seems to be where many draw the line.
At $60, the PlayStation Classic may well sell more, particularly given how easy it is to get other games running on the system. As a reminder, here are the games you get out of the box:
- Battle Arena Toshinden
- Cool Boarders 2
- Destruction Derby
- Final Fantasy VII
- Grand Theft Auto
- Intelligent Qube
- Jumping Flash
- Metal Gear Solid
- Mr Driller
- Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
- Rayman
- Resident Evil Director’s Cut
- Revelations: Persona
- Ridge Racer Type 4
- Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
- Syphon Filter
- Tekken 3
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
- Twisted Metal
- Wild Arms
Unfortunately, there are some fan favourite games missing from the list, including Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot. If you do end up getting one, then do keep in mind that the Classic runs PAL versions of all games, and some users have been reporting poor performance in some games, so it isn't a flawless experience.
KitGuru Says: The NES and SNES Classics were huge sellers for Nintendo but Sony seemed to drop the ball with its own console. Did any of you pick up a PlayStation Classic? Does it justify its new $60 price tag?
