AMD Radeon VII Unboxing!

AMD took many of us by surprise when it announced the new Radeon VII graphics card back at CES 2019. Dubbed the world's first gaming GPU based on a 7nm process, AMD said it would be available from February 7th – and while we are not quite there yet, today we can take you through a full unboxing and overview of the new graphics card.

At this point in time we are still constrained by an AMD NDA, meaning we can't lift the lid on the card's performance just yet. We can reiterate a few key points about the new Radeon VII, with the first being it is indeed the world's first gaming graphics card that uses a 7nm GPU – in this case, the GPU is named Vega 20, when Vega 56 and Vega 64 graphics cards use Vega 10 GPUs.

Vega 20 sports a total of 60 compute units, with 3840 stream processors, and the GPU is said to be able to run at up to 1.8GHz – how much time the chip will actually spend at that frequency we are not yet sure, so that will be something to look at in the review.

As part of the unboxing of this card, we were given a small stand for the Radeon VII. Embedded into this is a dummy Vega 20 GPU (pictured above), and we can see that four stacks of HBM2 memory surround the graphics chip itself. The memory has a total capacity of 16GB and is capable of a whopping 1TB/s in terms of bandwidth, while it operates over a 4096-bit bus.

As for the Radeon VII card itself, this has undergone quite the transformation from AMD's previous reference design. Gone is the single blower-style fan and instead we have three axial spinners, each of which measures in at 75mm. The card is also now quite a bright silver in colour, and it seems the shroud is made of anodised aluminium which gives a premium look and feel to the card.

Other things to note so far include the dual 8-pin PCIe power plugs, while display outputs consist of 3x DisplayPort and 1x HDMI.

We're still waiting for further information on pricing, but the card is set to cost $699 USD. Stay tuned for the full review coming very soon.

KitGuru says: This is just a teaser for now, but our full review – complete with game performance, thermals and acoustics – will be dropping very soon. Let us know what you think of Radeon VII – anyone planning on picking one up?
