Former Infinity Ward developer says Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare 2 will never happen

Although Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was debatably the game that prompted historically inspired shooters to return, being the best-selling console game of 2016 means there’s still a demand for a sequel. Former Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling has since shut these hopes down, emphasising to fans that Infinite Warfare 2 is “never” going to happen.

Activision’s trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare quickly became the most disliked video on YouTube during the time of its launch, as fatigue from futuristic shooters set in. The game still sold incredibly well, but this has been attributed to the publisher bundling Infinite Warfare with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remaster.

Replying to a follower who teased the wanting of an Infinite Warfare sequel, Bowling stated that fans “will NEVER get Infinite Warfare 2” but should be looking out for a “Modern shooter this year.” Although this could be hinting at Infinity Ward’s upcoming Call of Duty game this year, Bowling hasn’t worked for Activision for some years now. Alternatively, Bowling could be using his insider knowledge as EA’s creative consultant to hint at a new Battlefield, although it seems unlikely that he would risk his job by breaking a non-disclosure agreement.

Infinity Ward is rumoured to be working on Modern Warfare 4, which would certainly fit in with the theme of a new modern shooter and the sneaky capitalisation of “Modern” in Bowling's post. Despite these whispers, the developer has yet to confirm any details surrounding Call of Duty 2019, so it's best to take these rumours with a pinch of salt.

KitGuru Says: While I’ve never really subscribed to the Modern Warfare series, it only takes a pair of eyes to know that a sequel is more in demand than another Infinite Warfare.
