Respawn set to launch Apex Legends today- a F2P, battle royale Titanfall spin-off

While Titanfall 2 didn't do as well as it deserved, Respawn Entertainment is sticking with the franchise for the time being. Over the weekend, it came to light that Respawn has been working on a free-to-play spin-off title based in the Titanfall universe, and it is supposed to get a surprise release today.

Respawn's spin-off is called ‘Apex Legends' and is set to be a multiplayer, battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Rod Breslau was the first to report this, stating that streamers took part in an event last week to check the game out ahead of launch.

Apex Legends will feature classes/heroes with unique abilities, maximum of 60 players per server, maximum of 3 players per team (trios) to compliment each other. No titans. Just as Titanfall and Titanfall 2, Apex Legends will run on a modified version of Valve's Source engine.

The game will feature different classes/heroes with their own abilities. You'll be able to team up in groups of three and battle it out in 60-player matches. There are no titans in Apex Legends, which is why this isn't launching with Titanfall in the name. Just like the first two Titanfall games, Apex Legends will run on a modified version of Valve's Source Engine, ensuring decent performance across platforms.

The full announcement is set to arrive later today at 8PM GMT. This appears to be Respawn's way of keeping the Titanfall franchise active while the rest of the studio focuses on developing Jedi: Fallen Order, which is supposed to come out later this year.

KitGuru Says: Given that this will be a free to play title, it will be interesting to see what monetisation models are in place. It will also be interesting to see how people react to a lack of Titans in a game set in the same universe.
