Respawn is working on a premium Titanfall game slated for this year

After the surprise launch of battle royale Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment confirmed yesterday that it wasn’t working on Titanfall 3. This seems to contrast EA’s recent earnings report, which states that the studio will deliver another premium Titanfall game by the end of the year.

Apex Legends is already doing incredibly well, with EA boasting 600,000 concurrent players by the end of its first day. CEO Andrew Wilson emphasised upon the game’s success to counteract somewhat disappointing sales from Battlefield V, stating that “it's very early, but the response to the game has been very, very strong. We've been the number one views game on Twitch since launch and player sentiment seems to be very, very high right now.”

The statement ended with the reveal that “Respawn also plans to launch a premium game this year that is a new twist on the Titanfall universe,” despite Respawn CEO Vince Zampella emphasising that a third entry wasn’t on the cards just hours prior. Taking to Twitter, Zampella revealed that the studio is, in fact, “working on more Titanfall for later in the year” and that the team “loves being able to experiment in this crazy universe.”

All indications point to this mysterious entry being a spin-off with new mechanics, however the emphasis on “premium” from Wilson indicates that it will carry the Titanfall name unlike Apex Legends. Respawn is no stranger to spin-offs having launched real-time strategy game Titanfall Assault in 2017, however the mobile game was shut down just last year.

Unfortunately, that’s all we know about the mysterious Titanfall game set to debut at some point in 2019. All we know is that we can rest assured that Zampella wasn’t talking about the reported VR experience.

KitGuru Says: The original Titanfall was incredibly popular despite the fatigue of futuristic shooters, thanks to its innovative mechanics and unique twists. It’s safe to say that I can’t wait to see what Respawn has in store for the series. What do you hope to see from another premium Titanfall game? Are you enjoying Apex Legends?

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
