Skybound Entertainment shuts down Overkill’s The Walking Dead

After a lengthy development cycle and several delays, Overkill's The Walking Dead finally launched on PC late last year. The game was unable to rack up sales early on and received mixed reviews, forcing Starbreeze to begin cost cutting– a move that included shelving development on the console versions of the game. Now, Skybound Entertainment is calling off its contract with the publisher.

Skybound Entertainment is the company founded by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead. According to a statement released by Skybound last night, Overkill's The Walking Dead did not meet the quality level promised by Starbreeze. As a result, Skybound is cancelling its contract.

Here is the full statement given to Variety: “Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of ‘The Walking Dead’ into an exceptional co-op action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately ‘Overkill’s The Walking Dead’ did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised.”

“We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP”.

This news comes just days after Starbreeze insisted that Overkill's The Walking Dead was still coming to console, even after pre-orders began getting cancelled and refunded by the likes of Sony. The game will no longer be coming to consoles after all and Valve is currently figuring out what to do about the PC version on Steam.

KitGuru Says: I remember being quite excited for Overkill's The Walking Dead several years ago, back when Payday was still popular. Unfortunately, the game took too long to release and ultimately failed to really impress. Did any of you pick up Overkill's The Walking Dead?
