While there has been plenty of criticism of Dragon's Dogma 2, the game still drew in positive critic reviews and high player counts at launch. Since its release on the 21st of March, the game has managed to surpass 2.5 million copies sold.
For comparison, the original Dragon's Dogma and its re-release had sold around 7.5 million copies over the span of a decade. With Dragon's Dogma 2's 2.5 million sales added to the mix, the franchise as a whole has surpassed 10 million sales.
These launch numbers are close to the Resident Evil Remake games and newer titles like Street Fighter 6. However, the real test will be in the game's long-term sales, which could be boosted by the addition of new content.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is in many ways supposed to be the full realisation of the ideas the original game put forward. It isn't a direct story continuation of the first game, so potential buyers can jump in without fear of being lost. With that said, Dragon's Dogma is also a mechanically intense game, so there will be a lot for you to learn and manage.
