PlayStation 5 Pro’s PS4 game enhancer detailed

Back when the PlayStation 5 Pro was first announced, one off-hand statement in the initial blog post seemed to suggest that PS4 titles would benefit from some form of visual improvements on the pro system. While details were incredibly light at the time, we now have a slightly better idea on what this game enhancer does.

As part of the initial announcement for the PS5 Pro, Sony revealed that the upgraded console would offer “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games…to improve the resolution on select PS4 games.”

While Sony has yet to give further details on this feature, some Pro consoles have arrived in the hands of users, giving us a better look at its functionality.

According to a screenshot shared by ResetEra user ‘modiz’, the ‘Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games’ toggle looks to be a system-wide upscaling pass, not too dissimilar to AMD’s FSR1 – meaning it does not use motion vectors to work.

Even so, given the fact that most base PS4 titles run at a native 1080p, even a rudimentary upscaler should hopefully make a noticeable difference.

It is worth noting that Sony states the feature may not work on all PS4 titles, however this is likely more of a function of legalese, similar to the regular PS5’s backwards compatibility – which is pretty much flawless.

With the PS5 Pro just a few days away from officially launching, we will hopefully get a ton more concrete details on exactly how this upscaler works – and whether it is worth getting excited about.
