Astro Bot reaches new 3D platformer sales record in Europe

Astro Bot marks the latest and greatest first-party exclusive from Sony, with the PS5 title launching last month to universal acclaim from both critics and players alike. Despite being a relatively new IP, the platformer had proven to be a major success in the UK – with all of Europe now pushing sales even further.

Shortly following the official launch of Astro Bot, Chris Dring of Gamesindustry.biz revealed that the 3D platformer was “the fastest selling original platform game outside of Mario from the last 10 years. Bigger than Sonic, Crash, Yoshi, Kirby” in the UK.

Dring has returned once again with further figures, revealing that across all of Europe, one month from its launch, “Astro Bot sales are 34% higher than Sonic Frontiers and 52% bigger than Crash 4” adding that it “has done better than basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years (Mario aside). Its true success won't be known for years, but it's had a strong start for the genre.”

As with Mario games, hopefully Astro Bot will have a long shelf life, with new and old PS5 owners alike picking up the game over the coming years.

Regardless, Astro Bot’s success seems to prove that there is space and demand in the 3D platformer genre – it just needed a genuinely great non-Mario game to prove this. Hopefully we get official concrete sales figures soon.
