AMD Navi 44 GPU reportedly smaller than Navi 33

Newly found shipping manifests reference Navi 44 GPUs being shipped. These entries have shown some details on the GPUs, identified by a matching board number and GPU name. Besides the package, the entry also revealed the size of the unreleased GPU, which, according to the data, will be smaller than the current-gen Navi 33 that powers the RX 7600 series.

In an intriguing departure from past naming conventions, AMD's Navi 4X series is expected to include a Navi 44 and a Navi 48 GPU. Unlike we're used to seeing, the former will be the smaller and least powerful of both. As per the Navi 44's package size reported by Olrak and corroborated by the shipping manifests shared by VideoCardz, the upcoming GPU is expected to be in a 29×29 mm package (840 mm²), putting at an area approximately 31% smaller than Navi 33.

However, it's important to note that the smaller package size does not necessarily imply a smaller GPU die. The package houses the GPU die, transistors, a metal frame, and a few other components, all of which could contribute to the size difference. Furthermore, AMD's approach to packaging has shown that smaller packaging can still accommodate powerful components, as seen in the case of the Navi 31 XL.

The AMD Navi 4X series is slated for release in Q1 2025. While AMD has not made official statements about its next-generation GPU series, it's expected to focus on market size and the mainstream segment rather than trying to capture the high-end/enthusiast segment.
