Activision Blizzard is letting go of around 800 employees

Over the weekend, it was reported that Activision Blizzard was planning to lay-off hundreds of staff members. The company held its quarterly financial earnings meeting last night, confirming that revenues are up, but despite that, the company will be shaving off eight percent of its staff. Around 800 employees will be let go.

Activision Blizzard brought in a record high net revenue of $7.5 billion in 2018, which is the highest in the company's history. However, Activision Blizzard is going through a restructuring and isn't anticipating as much success in 2019. As a result, cost-cutting measures are being put in place, which includes laying off approximately 800 people.

On the blizzard side, these layoffs only appear to have affected those outside of game development, according to Kotaku. Support teams will be the main issue, including Activision's Destiny 2 support team, alongside over-staffed support teams for some of Blizzard's own titles.

Those who are being let go will receive a “comprehensive severance package”, will continue to receive their health care benefits, have access to career coaching and job placement assistance. This won't make the transition easy for everyone, but Activision Blizzard seems to be making an effort to help those affected land on their feet elsewhere.

KitGuru Says: It is always a shame to see staff laid off, particularly at a high-profile company that is doing so well financially. Hopefully those affected land on their feet swiftly enough.
