Netflix is dropping Apple AirPlay support due to ‘technical limitations’

In a surprisingly sudden move, Netflix has announced that it will no longer be supporting AirPlay, Apple's content-beaming technology. Previously on an iOS or macOS device, you would be able to transfer a Netflix stream to a bigger screen, but due to apparent ‘technical limitations', Netflix says it can no longer support AirPlay.

Apple recently partnered up with a few notable TV brands to add AirPlay 2 support to Smart TVs. Apple will also be releasing its own Apple TV application for Smart TVs in an effort to boost reach for its own upcoming streaming service. Initially, Netflix didn't offer much of an explanation for dropping AirPlay support, but some elaboration has since been offered.

In a statement given to The Verge, a Netflix spokesperson said: “With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn’t a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn’t) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met.”

While AirPlay support is going away, Netflix will still be available on Apple and non-Apple devices as a standalone app.

KitGuru Says: Nowadays, Netflix is available almost absolutely everywhere, no matter what device you are using. With that in mind, AirPlay isn't exactly a critical feature. Still, taking away functionality is never going to be a widely celebrated move.
