Gearbox Software officially announces Borderlands 3

Not even a presentation riddled with technical difficulties could stop the crowd from roaring when Gearbox officially lifted the lid on Borderlands 3 today at PAX East. Although we have no idea just how long we will have to wait for the game to launch, the publisher has left us with a sleek 4K trailer to deconstruct.

Borderlands 3 features familiar 4-player co-op gameplay, with a brand new team of Vault Hunters to choose from. Fortunately, there’s a lot of continuity for returning players as Lilith, Maya, Mordecai, Ellie, Marcus, Tiny Tina and Brick return in the trailer, the latter of which indulges in a sweet saxophone solo.

We still don’t know the names of the new playable characters, but we get a good look at them 30 seconds in. The one on the far left is seen with Siren marking over her toned arms, displaying the ability to summon appendages and contain enemies in a bubble. Next in is the heavy, who appears to be a hulking robot that seemingly fights alongside indigenous animals. Underneath all of that armour of the third Hunter is a young girl that seems to be linked to a mech that her or her teammates can pilot. The last of the lot appears to be a mechanically enhanced Hunter who can create holographic versions of himself.

Despite the similarities, Borderlands 3 looks set to delve into a variety of new areas, from the wastelands we’re accustomed, to beautiful cityscapes. Gearbox is also going all-in on its iconic loot system, promising over 1 billion different guns, including ones with legs.

The publisher has kept hush on a release date for now, but proudly states that the game has been worked on for the past 5 years. Hopefully that means that there isn’t too long left to wait. In the meantime, Gearbox is releasing its remastered Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition and 4K resolution make-overs for Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel due out on April 3.

KitGuru Says: Borderlands has an incredible amount of personality, making it a wonderful series to look forward to once again. Personally, I hope that Tales From The Borderlands’ Rhys and Fiona make an appearance, but I’m not about to get my hopes up. What or who do you want to see appear in the third entry?
