Final Fantasy has had a long and storied history, with the classic video game franchise spawning dozens of titles across a multitude of genres. One of the most popular spin-offs was Final Fantasy Tactics. Though the sub-series has not seen a new entry in ages, according to Square Enix “It’s probably about time.”
In a recent interview conducted by ‘TheGamer’ during PAX East, the Final Fantasy XVI team sat down to discuss the PS5 game’s upcoming DLC ‘The Rising Tide’.
Though focused primarily on FFXVI, Naoki Yoshida; Takeo Kujiraoka and Michael-Christoper Koji Fox were asked about “using Final Fantasy 16 as the base for a new Tactics title” to which the trio responded:
“What would we even call it? Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot,” adding that “we’re very happy for you to suggest this because we’re all fans, but if we were going to make this, we wouldn’t want to do the same story that turns out to be a different story.”
While the logistics surrounding the possibility of a new Tactics title were brought into question, the team did conclude their thoughts by claiming “It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”
Final Fantasy Tactics released back in 1997 to universal fan acclaim and an equally impressive critical reception. Since then, there have been a couple portable sequels and spin-offs, though none in over a decade – with the latest entry being the ill-fated Japanese mobile exclusive Final Fantasy Tactics S.
With how much reverence Final Fantasy Tactics has in the eyes of fans, it is certainly about time that Square Enix began thinking about a new entry.
