The HoloLens 2 ‘Development Edition’ will cost $3,500

It has been a few months since the HoloLens 2 was first announced and now, Microsoft is ready to start shipping the augmented reality headset off to developers. It will be an expensive investment, with the ‘development edition' costing $3,500, although you do get some bonuses.

The HoloLens 2 is powered by a Snapdragon 850 and one of Microsoft's own holographic processing units. It also comes with extra tracking sensors for six degrees of freedom (6DoF), hand tracking and eye tracking. The display also has a higher resolution (47 pixels per degree) and a wider field of view. It is all cutting edge tech, so it shouldn't be too surprising that the development edition will cost $3,500. The first generation HoloLens was also on the pricey side of things, with a $3,000 price tag.

While those buying the standalone HoloLens 2 just get the headset, those buying the development edition do get some extras, including $500 of credit for Microsoft Azure and a trial version of Unity Pro.

If you don't happen to have $3,500 handy, then Microsoft also has a $99 per month payment plan option in place.

KitGuru Says: The HoloLens does look like an awesome idea and we were very impressed when the first version was announced back in 2016. However, it will be quite some time before it is considered to truly be consumer ready.
