The Witcher 3 won’t require extra downloads for physical edition on Switch, screenshots released

Last week, we learned that The Witcher 3 would be coming to the Nintendo Switch this year complete with all of its DLC. Usually when we see a game of this magnitude coming to Switch, hefty downloads are required even for those buying physical editions. That won't be the case with The Witcher 3, as CD Projekt Red has opted to shell out for higher capacity cartridges for the physical version of the game. We also have a bunch of new screenshots to look at to see how it really looks on Nintendo's handheld hybrid console.

Titles like DOOM, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, NBA 2K, LA Noire and more have all released on smaller 8GB or 16GB physical cartridges, requiring physical edition owners to download a large chunk of the game in order to play. The Witcher 3 for Switch will buck this trend and will ship on a 32GB cartridge, allowing the full game to remain on the cartridge with no extra downloads. The physical version of the game also ships with some extra goodies, including a compendium, a map of the Witcher 3 world and stickers.

So The Witcher 3 has extra care taken with its physical edition on Switch but how does the game look when running on the console? At this point in time, we know that the game targets 30 frames per second at 720p while docked and 540p in handheld mode. As you can see from the screenshots above, some areas of the game look fairly good. Cinematic moments all look as good as they should and parts of the world hold up nicely too.

Toussaint doesn't seem to look quite as nice though. The region has a brighter colour scheme compared to Velen and Skellige, which makes the foliage look noticeably blurrier. Still, it should be perfectly fine to play and when it comes down to it, it is a miracle we're going to get to play a game like this on a handheld system at all.

KitGuru Says: We don't have an exact release date for The Witcher 3 on Switch just yet but I am very excited to get my hands on it. Are any of you planning on picking this one up when it comes out?
