To the surprise of many, Microsoft announced earlier this year that they would be bringing 4 of their exclusive Xbox games to other platforms – namely PlayStation and Switch. The next Xbox title set to drop onto Sony’s system is Sea of Thieves. Ahead of the game’s 30th of April release, a closed beta will be taking place.
As shared by the official Sea of Thieves Twitter page, “The Sea of Thieves PlayStation 5 Closed Beta takes place this weekend, April 12th-15th (9am UTC) [10am UK Time]! Participate to earn the Dauntless Adventurer Sails and Title, for use exclusively on the PlayStation platform.”
Being a closed beta, only those who pre-order the game will be able to access Sea of Thieves during this period. It is somewhat curious to see the team opting for a closed beta as going the open route could help boost immediate interest in the game.
Still, a beta is a beta and means PS5 players will be able to gauge their thoughts on the game ahead of launch. Additionally, the beta could allow for some last minute tweaks and optimisations, ensuring the PS5 release goes as smoothly as possible.
While an open beta would have been preferable, those interested in getting Sea of Thieves for the PS5 will hopefully find many benefits to trying out this closed beta ahead of the game’s official release.
