The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting a sequel because DLC wasn’t enough

During E3 last week, one of Nintendo’s biggest surprise announcements was that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development. Then teaser gave us a rough idea of where things are heading this time around but now series producer, Eiji Aonuma, has spoken a bit more on why the team decided to return to Breath of the Wild instead of starting over again with something entirely new.

The Legend of Zelda is a series known for reinventing itself with almost every new addition. With Breath of the Wild though, the team had so many additional DLC ideas for its open world version of Hyrule, which eventually convinced them to work on a bigger sequel instead.

Speaking with Kotaku, Aonuma said: “Initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas, but then we had a lot of ideas and we said, ‘This is too many ideas, let’s just make one new game and start from scratch’.”

Some of these ideas were larger in scope and would require deeper technical changes to the game, so it was decided that “DLC is not enough” and that a full sequel would be a better fit. We’ve seen this line of thinking previously at Nintendo, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 being born out of left-over ideas the team had for the first game.

KitGuru Says: Breath of the Wild is an excellent game and is certainly deserving of a sequel. It will be interesting to see what new ideas the developers bring to the table next time around. Did many of you play the first game? Are you looking forward to the sequel?
