Platinum Games head isn’t too impressed with next-gen consoles

At this point, both Sony and Microsoft have confirmed some key details about their next-gen consoles. Sony has demonstrated its PS5 SSD speeds while Microsoft has released a Project Scorpio style teaser for its new hardware, which will be arriving in late 2020. Now, some developers are starting to share their opinions on the upgrades we’re in for.

Earlier this week, Game Informer’s Andrew Reiner tweeted that various developers have told him that Sony’s next-gen PlayStation will be more powerful than Microsoft’s new Xbox. While that could end up being the case, Platinum Games head, Atsushi Inaba, has spoken about both next-gen consoles briefly and doesn’t seem too impressed be either of them.

Speaking with Video Game Chronicle, Inaba said: “It's OK. And by that I mean, I'm sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that's good for the consumer. But it’s more of the same quite frankly. Compared to previous generations, it’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative”.

If you are primarily a PC gamer, then you likely share very similar thoughts to Inaba. We’ve had SSDs for years and the benefit of more powerful hardware, allowing for higher resolutions and frame rates. Ultimately though, many games still develop with consoles in mind, so any jump console hardware makes will have an impact on what we see on PC as well.

We already know quite a bit about the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft. We don’t know which one will ultimately be more powerful, or if it will be as clear cut as it was this generation with the PS4 and Xbox One. However, we do know that both the PS5 and Project Scarlett will use a 7nm SoC with a Zen 2 CPU and Navi/RDNA graphics from AMD. Some form of ray-tracing support is going to be included and both consoles will be making the jump to SSD storage.

KitGuru Says: I’m not expecting to be blown away by next-gen consoles, especially since they are arriving so soon after the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. Really what it will come down to for many is the exclusive games line up, which seems to be the case every generation. Although I am intrigued to see how games will change once SSDs become the standard across the board.
