Despite reports, CD Projekt Red says it is not working on three Cyberpunk games

Earlier this week, reports emerged surrounding CD Projekt Red and its plans for Cyberpunk 2077 as a gaming franchise. After roughly translating a Polish interview, it was reported that the studio had three Cyberpunk related games in the works- the main game, a multiplayer spin-off and a third mystery title. It turns out that the English translation wasn't entirely accurate, so CD Projekt Red has clarified the situation.

CD Projekt president, Adam Kiciński, was quoted as telling Bankier.pl that the team was working on “three Cyberpunk things- over the main game and over two more”. The rumour was that one of these projects was CD Projekt Red's next planned Triple A title, while the other was a multiplayer spin-off based in the Cyberpunk universe.

In an updated statement, CD Projekt Red has clarified what its plans are and confirming that the translated quote was misinterpreted: “We currently have a total of five teams working on a number of projects, with three focusing on the development of Cyberpunk 2077. These include CD Projekt Red Warsaw and Kraków, who are handling the main game, as well as the Wrocław studio, where around 40 industry specialists are engaged in technology R&D”.

“A separate, dedicated team at the Warsaw studio is handling the development of Gwent. The final team is Spokko, which is currently working on a yet unannounced mobile project.”

At this point, all of the focus is on Cyberpunk 2077, which is releasing in April 2020. After that, there will likely be Witcher 3-style expansions, which are already being discussed internally.

KitGuru Says: I wouldn't be surprised if Cyberpunk did end up being CD Projekt Red's main franchise focus for the next decade but it is still a bit early to be thinking about all of that. For now, we should just wait and see how the main game turns out.
