Bungie pushes back Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and free to play launch

It has been almost two months since Bungie first announced Destiny 2's next expansion and plans to make the base game and first-year DLCs all free to play. At the time, the new expansion and free to play transition were due to take place in September but a small delay has pushed things back a bit.

Originally, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Destiny 2: New Light were both due to launch on the 17th of September. However, Bungie has opted to give the expansion and the new free to play version of Destiny 2 some “more time in the oven”. With that in mind, Shadowkeep and New Light will both now be launching on the 1st of October.

Bungie became an independent studio right at the start of this year, giving the team complete control over Destiny 2 and its future releases. Being independent and wanting to release the best version of the game possible paved the way for this new release date.

While Shadowkeep (the new expansion) and New Light (Destiny 2 F2P) will be launching a little later than anticipated, Bungie is still planning to launch cross-save functionality this summer, so we can still expect that to go live either in August or September.

KitGuru Says: Bungie is fully independent now, so it makes sense for the team to push things back and go at its own pace now that there are no publisher shareholders hanging over them. I'm still looking forward to seeing what the future holds now that Destiny is solely in Bungie's hands.
