UltraViolet cloud film and TV service shuts down this week

Earlier this year, it was announced that UltraViolet would be shutting down at the end of July. The UV service would often give Blu-Ray buyers a digital copy of their physical movies, but with streaming services on the rise and competitors ushering in their own alternatives, UltraViolet sales fell significantly and this week, the service will close down for good.

UltraViolet was one of the first digital home entertainment services. The cloud-based film collection service gave Blu-Ray buyers a chance to build their digital libraries up and get used to the idea of digital-only content before transitioning over completely from physical discs. Over the years, UV users had access to over 300 million films and TV episodes.

That impressive library will soon be gone, although there is an alternative method in place for heavy users to preserve their digital libraries. The UltraViolet website currently has the option to log in and link your account to participating retailers. This won't work for every single movie or TV show, but the hope is that most users will be able to transfer their UV copy to a partnering retailer service, like Flixter or Kaleidescape.

UltraViolet officially shuts down on Wednesday the 31st of July. You will need to link your account to another service before then in order to retain your eligible content.

KitGuru Says: I never really got around to redeeming any of my UV codes from old Blu-Ray purchases but I know quite a few people out there did make heavy use of them. Did any of you use UV regularly?
