Epic Games paid over $10 million for timed exclusivity on Remedy’s Control

Epic Games has been shelling out piles of cash to developers and publishers all year long in an effort to bolster the Epic Games Store with content. So far, we’ve only had vague information as to how much money is involved in these deals. For the creators of Phoenix Point, it was enough to make the game profitable before it had even released. In the case of Control from Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games, we have more exact figures.

Digital Bros, the parent company of publisher 505 Games, has revealed its most recent financial report, which lists 505 Games getting €9.49 million (roughly $10.5 million USD) from Epic Games. This amount was then divided up with 505 Games taking 45 percent for publishing and Remedy getting 55 percent.

For reference, Remedy CEO, Tero Virtala, previously said at Devcom 2019 that the budget for Control was somewhere between €20m and €30m. If we assume that the game came closer to €30m, then Epic paid almost a third of the development cost to have Control be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for one year.

Remedy would still need to sell a couple of million copies of Control to turn a profit, which will heavily depend on digital console sales, as so far, physical retail sale numbers have been quite low.

KitGuru Says: I’ve been really enjoying Control myself, so I do hope it ends up doing well. Although there have been some performance issues on the console versions. Have many of you played Control yet?
