PS5 Pro will reportedly focus on offering 60fps

Though it still feels in many ways as though the current generation of video game consoles only just released, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are now well over 3 years old. Sony looks set to update its system with a PS5 Pro – the leaks and rumours of which have been increasingly prevalent. According to insiders, one of the primary goals by Sony with the PS5 Pro is to offer more titles running at 60fps.

This generation we have seen Sony focusing hard on offering a number of performance modes for its titles, with pretty much every first-party game either running at or offering a 60fps mode. That said, as the console matures, we will likely soon begin to see more games limited to just 30fps.

Sony’s leaked PS5 Pro seems focused on continuing the 60fps trend with The Verge claiming that “Sony is asking developers to create a new PS5 Pro-exclusive graphics mode in games that combines Sony's new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling to 4K resolution with a 60fps frame rate and ray-tracing effects.”

That said, according to The Verge, this 60fps target is not a requirement, with Sony allowing this ‘Enhanced’ moniker to be “available for a variety of other scenarios that include 30fps games.”

With the likes of PSSR set to come to the PS5 Pro, it will be interesting to see whether first-party titles still target 60fps on the base machine, or whether 30fps will once again become the new standard.
