Nintendo peripheral partner unveils early Switch 2 details

We've been hearing about Nintendo's next-gen console plans for months already. Now, thanks to a Nintendo supply chain partner, we seem to have a few concrete details on the Switch 2, which is described as a “conservative evolution” of the original Switch design.

While Nintendo typically jumps from one bright idea to the next with each console system, using hardware to implement new gaming features, like dual-screen games, Glasses-free 3D, motion controls and more. With the Switch, the big design choice was to have a system that could dock to be played on a TV, with detachable controllers, or taken on the go. This design has been immensely popular and is responsible for many other companies also getting into the handheld market once again.

According to Mobapad, a China-based peripherals manufacturer that develops Switch-compatible controllers and accessories, the Switch 2 will include a larger, 1080p display. Meanwhile, the new controllers for the system will be smaller and will attach magnetically, rather than using the current rail system.

The Switch 2 should also support both physical and digital Switch games. However, games developed for the new system will use a different cartridge design to stop them from being put into a 1st Gen Switch. This is very similar to how Nintendo handled the 3DS, with new 3DS games including an extra piece of plastic that blocked the cartridge from being slotted into an older console.

The Switch 2 is currently expected to launch in early 2025, although Nintendo has not publicly announced its plans yet.
