Fallout 4 players are using mods to bypass the next-gen update

Bethesda's recent update for Fallout 4 on PC did little to impress fans. The update did break many mods and the touted 21:9 support simply stretches the 16:9 image, leading to poor presentation. Now, players are flocking to mods that can uninstall the recent patch.

Over on NexusMods, The Fallout 4 Downgrader has become one of the most downloaded mods this month. As the title of the mod indicates, this tool lets you revert your Fallout 4 installation to the version before the next-gen update. As spotted by PCGamer, another mod called Steam: Skip Next Gen Update is also rising up the charts on NexusMods and is intended for those who have not yet installed the next-gen update. This mod will simply fool Steam into thinking the update was installed, allowing you to continue playing your modded version of the game without worrying about the update installing automatically.

After reverting your game to the pre-update version, you should be able to use mods that rely on the Fallout 4 Script Extender again. This should also mean that you can continue with your old save as if the next-gen update never happened. There is also another mod that adds the new Creation Club content to the pre-patch version of Fallout 4, so you don't have to miss out on that stuff either.

While the NexusMods website was having some traffic issues in the weeks following the release of the Fallout TV show, things have settled down since, so you should be able to browse and download mods once again without issue.

KitGuru Says: The next-gen update sucked, bringing little of value to the PC version of the game. Any bug fixes could likely already be solved with the unofficial community patch, which also exists for other Bethesda titles like Skyrim. Still, it seems like an easy fix for those who installed the update and had their modded playthroughs broken.
