AMD Threadripper rumour round-up, TRX40, Gen 4.0 PCIe and more

At this point, we know that 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors are coming, it is just a matter of when. In the months following Computex, lots of rumours have been circulating, giving us an early idea of what to expect from 7nm Threadripper and its new chipset.

Right now, 3rd Gen Threadripper is believed to be codenamed Castle Peak. A few weeks ago, we saw some mentions of an X590 chipset motherboard, presumably for new Threadripper. However, the chipset might actually be going under a different name. The folks at USB-IF put up listings for TRX40, TRX80 and WRX80 under the heading ‘AMD 2019 Premium Chipset'.

It seems likely that the ‘TR' stands for Threadripper, while the chipset numbering could hint towards memory channels. Perhaps we'll see two versions, one with support for four-channel memory and another with eight channel, although that is just speculation for now and could be wide of the mark. It is also worth pointing out that PCI-SIG certification has confirmed PCIe 4.0 support for this new platform, although we don't know how many PCIe lanes 3rd Gen Threadripper will utilise. If Threadripper ends up being fairly similar to EPYC, then we could see support for up to 128 PCIe lanes.

Those aren't all of the leaks we've seen circulating though. The folks at videocardz have heard that two AMD-based motherboards are being worked on for TRX40.  One of these is said to be an ASUS Prime TRX40-PRO and the other should be an ASUS ROG Strix TRX40-E Gaming. There is also evidence to suggest that MSI has two TRX40 chipset motherboards on the way.

We don't know precisely when Threadripper 3000 will be officially announced but current rumours suggest a November launch. Nothing is confirmed just yet though, so take that with a grain of salt.

KitGuru Says: Nothing has been officially confirmed by AMD regarding Threadripper 3000 but we expect rumours and leaks to keep piling up in the following weeks. Once we have official word, we will be sure to let you all know. What do you think of the Threadripper news so far? Are you planning on making the upgrade?

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
