Call of Duty Modern Warfare beats Black Ops 4 in first week sales

Going back to its roots and reimagining the 2007 smash hit that was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, seems to be paying off as, if the UK sales charts are any indication to go by, Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) is outpacing the sales of last year’s Black Ops 4.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, the game has sold 39% more physical units in its first week of sales when compared to last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Modern Warfare didn’t manage to beat 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII, however, in the last 2 years, the ratio between digital and physical sales has changed dramatically.

It was reported that in 2018, 80% of all video game revenue made in the UK was from digital sales, with that figure likely to have increased further since. PlayStation also revealed earlier this year that over half of all its game unit sales were digital, rather than physical.

This data points to Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare being an even bigger hit than current official figures are claiming. Its commercial success, alongside its critical praise could mean that Call of Duty has managed to crawl out of its slump which it had been experiencing over the last few years.

Only time will tell whether the game is able to maintain its positive momentum, but for now, it seems like Call of Duty Modern Warfare is off to a great start.
