Huawei reports strong sales despite US ban

Despite being added to the US Entity list in May, effectively banning all US companies from trading with Huawei, the Chinese tech giant appears to be doing just fine.

While the future of US-Huawei relations seems to be uncertain, the company hasn’t been resting on its laurels. Huawei has reportedly shipped over 185 million smartphones in the first three quarters of 2019, which represents a year-on-year growth of 26%. Equally, revenue for the first three quarters has seen a year-on-year growth of 24.4%, with Huawei making 610.8 billion yuan (£67.37b).

Furthermore, Huawei have also signed more than 60 commercial contracts, giving them the rights to provide 5G equipment around the world. This is despite the fears that Huawei would have the capabilities to provide a backdoor in its network for the Chinese government to use.

It seems that as of right now, the US ban has been unsuccessful in preventing Huawei from maintaining its position as the second highest selling phone manufacturer – a feat it snatched from Apple in 2018. The real test is yet to come however. Back in September, Huawei revealed its latest flagship: the Mate 30 Pro. This phone lacks a feature however, that all its other phones shipped in 2019 (in the west) did – Google services.

The lack of the Google Play Store, and other major Google services, may be the thing that finally slows down Huawei’s growth streak. Talks between the US and Huawei are constantly evolving however, so in the long run it may simply be a blip on the radar, but that remains to be seen.
