Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV officially announced at BlizzCon 2019

BlizzCon 2019 kicked off yesterday with an apology from Blizzard president J. Allen Brack, regarding the controversial suspension of certain esports competitors over the Hong Kong democracy protests. The major points to come out of BlizzCon 2019 were the announcements of two big new games.

If you are a fan of Overwatch, then you will be very happy to hear that Blizzard will be bringing out a sequel to the massively popular multiplayer first-person shooter. Overwatch 2 was announced to be officially in development. The full-on sequel will focus on new game modes including co-operative and PvE modes. Blizzard will also be adding Story missions and Hero missions where you can level up your heroes.

According to PC Gamer, a number of new features in Overwatch 2 such as new maps and heroes will also be coming to the original Overwatch to provide a “shared multiplayer environment”. On top of that, all your skins and cosmetics that you earn in the original Overwatch game will be carried over to Overwatch 2.

Blizzard did reveal some content from Overwatch 2 but it was very limited. An 8 minute cinematic was launched along with a sneak peek at one of the new Overwatch 2 heroes, Sojourn. Not much is know about her yet, other than she is Canadian with a rather large intimidating arm gun which suggests she is a damage-focused hero.

Game director Jeff Kaplan said the game is still in very early development and he has “no idea” when to expect a release. “Like, just let us make it great, that's what we care about more than anything. We don't have a date in mind.”

The other major announcement to come out of BlizzCon 2019 is Diablo IV. Maybe not such a surprise since details were leaked earlier this week. At least we know it is official now and all the rumours can be put to bed. Diablo IV is another sequel to a hugely popular franchise and will follow on with the theme of satanic rituals and plenty of blood and guts.

BlizzCon 2019 opened up with an extended trailer for Diablo IV which set out the story of the game and then followed up with some actual gameplay footage to whet the appetite of Diablo franchise fans. There will be further coverage of Diablo IV over the weekend at BlizzCon but it has been confirmed the game will follow a non-linear story mode set in an open world. The game will not feature an offline mode and we shouldn’t expect a release any time soon.
