Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 specs leak ahead of announcement next month

Over the course of this year, we have seen a lot of flagship smartphones launching with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor at the centre. In December, the next generation Snapdragon 865 will be officially unveiled, although leaks have already given us an early look at specifications and performance.

Qualcomm will be announcing the new chip at the Snapdragon Tech Summit next month. However, thanks to a Chinese leaker posting on Weibo, we already know quite a bit about the new flagship SoC. The Snapdragon 865 will once again utilise a mashup of eight cores, with speeds ranging from 1.8GHz to 2.84GHz.

The SoC is said to contain four Kyro Silver (Cortex-A55) cores that run at the 1.8GHz base speed, three Kyro Gold (Cortex-A77) cores running at 2.42GHz and an extra Kyro Gold core running at 2.84GHz, so tasks will be assigned to the chip based on overall needs, with high-load tasks calling on the faster cores for additional performance.

For graphics, the Snapdragon 865 is said to use an Adreno 650 GPU with a 587MHz clock speed, although similarly to the Snapdragon 855+, there is the possibility that a SD865 with beefier graphics will come later on in 2020. In terms of raw performance gains, the Snapdragon 865 CPU should be around 20% better than the 855, with GPU specific performance having a similar boost over the 855.

KitGuru Says: The Snapdragon Tech Summit takes place on the 3rd of December, so it won't be long before we get confirmation on the specs and performance gains listed here. Either way, this is an interesting look at what we can expect performance-wise from next year's high-end Android flagships.
