Pokémon Sword and Shield reviews are out – manages to side step controversies

The embargo for Pokémon Sword and Shield has lifted, meaning that reviewers are now able to inform fans on whether the 8th generation Pokémon games are worth purchasing or not. Despite all the controversies surrounding Pokémon Sword and Shield, it seems like GameFreak have once again been able to create an enjoyable experience for Pokémon fans. The first true Pokémon game on a home console appears to not disappoint.

The game is currently sitting at a Metacritic score of 81, citing generally favourable reviews by critics. While this score is likely to change as more reviews are submitted, the general consensus has been decided, and reviewers like the game.

IGN claims that “Pokémon Sword and Shield are the best games in the series, streamlining its most tedious traditions without losing any of the charm”. Gamespot meanwhile calls it “an incredibly strong showing for the series' proper debut on Switch”. Game Informer believes that “this new generation proves the Pokémon franchise is still great more than two decades after its debut”. Other reviews aren’t so positive, claiming “Sword and Shield can only be called ‘good’ Pokémon games…not ‘great’ ones”.

Pokémon Sword and Shield releases on the 15th of November, and it’ll be interesting to see where its user score will land. With the National Pokédex not returning, and data mines proving that the new game reuses models from the 3DS, fans have been voicing their displeasure online. For those who are not bothered by the removal of the National Dex however, it appears that Pokémon Sword and Shield is another great entry into the series, and adds another standout title to the Nintendo Switch’s line-up of first-party games.
