Nvidia’s latest driver update also fixes security vulnerabilities

If you aren’t interested in playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC this week, or getting G-Sync compatibility on LG’s 2019 OLED TVs, then you may have skipped over the most recent Nvidia graphics driver when it began rolling out earlier this week. If you are one of those people, then you may want to get around to installing the update anyway, as Nvidia’s recent security bulletin details several vulnerabilities that were also fixed in the latest release.

While G-Sync on LG OLEDs and optimisations for Rockstar’s lengthy western were the highlights in the release notes for Nvidia GeForce Driver 441.12, the new driver also addresses some security flaws. Most of these vulnerabilities result in denial of service attacks or escalation of privileges when exploited.

A few of the issues could be exploited via the kernel mode layer, while others affected the control panel, or the display driver itself. Some of these vulnerabilities don’t explicitly require local system access, although a couple of them do. By exploiting some of these flaws, an attacker could gain admin privileges, execute rogue code, run a denial of service attack etc.

With all of that in mind, be sure to keep your PC secure by installing the latest driver. You can find more information on the specific vulnerabilities and their severity in Nvidia’s latest security bulletin, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This one unfortunately flew under the radar for most of this week but now that the word is starting to spread, be sure to get your PC secure with the new driver update. Always best to take the time to avoid security vulnerabilities, even if you don’t think you will be specifically targeted.
