Intel and MediaTek partner to bring 5G to the PC

Usually when there is talk of 5G we automatically think of mobile phone handsets; however, Intel and Media Tek are partnering to develop certification and support of 5G modem solutions for the use in next-generation PC systems.

The partnership will include a 5G solution specification defined by Intel that will be developed and delivered by MediaTek. Intel will provide optimisation across the platform and further enable its OEM partners by lending system integration and co-engineering support. The first of these 5G modem solutions will be available early in 2021 with Dell and HP being among the first OEMs to integrate the technology into laptops.

5G is set to be a significant network transformation by merging computing and communications, it will open the door to new PC experiences and the way we are connected. Intel Has vast experience in the PC communications sector with its Wi-Fi 6 and LTE solutions for consumer platforms, while Project Athena is enabling powerful platforms for the data-centric era. This new partnership with MediaTek will expand Intel’s connectivity portfolio and deliver 5G on future generation advanced laptops.

With this partnership, consumers will be able to browse, stream and game faster on their PCs, but we also expect them to innovate with 5G in ways we have not yet imagined.”

In addition, the two companies are working together with Fibcom to develop M.2 modules optimised for integration with Intel client platforms. As a first for this type of M.2 solution, Fibocom will provide operator certification and regulatory support, as well as lead 5G M.2 module manufacturing, sales and distribution.
