Half-Life: Alyx debuts with an incredible gameplay trailer

For the first time in twelve years, Valve is releasing a Half-Life game. Some leaks earlier in the week caused Valve to confirm Half-Life: Alyx a little earlier than planned but today, just as scheduled, the first trailer dropped, giving us our first look at Valve's flagship VR game.

Valve has been experimenting with virtual reality for most of the last decade. Since the launch of the HTC VIVE and even the Valve Index, we have only seen some small experimental ‘experience' style releases intended as demos for VR controls and mechanics. Now, Valve is releasing its first full VR game, the first of three if we go by Gabe Newell's previous statements.

The trailer is fantastic, opening with a headcrab jumping at you and ending with an appearance from the ever illusive G-Man. During the journey, you will play as Alyx, attempting to steal a Combine weapon from the vault but in the process, her father is taken into custody. Those are the breadcrumbs that Valve gives us here and in March 2020, we'll be able to experience it all for ourselves.

Valve Index headset buyers will be getting the game bundled with their headset purchase, it is not an Index exclusive title though and will work on the Oculus Rift and other headsets currently supported on SteamVR. Currently, Valve plans to release the game in March 2020 and while that could change, Geoff Keighley has already announced another ‘Final Hours' documentary covering its release and has played the game in full. With that in mind, the release window seems pretty solid.

You can find Half-Life: Alyx on Steam, HERE.

KitGuru Says: While I am sure there are some Half-Life fans who don't own a VR headset and are disappointed, this is a huge moment not just for Valve, but for VR gaming as a whole. The game is looking good so far, now we just have to hope it also stands the test of time just as the previous Half-Life games did.
