Over the years, Fortnite has added tons of characters and skins into their game from across the world’s industries: from PlayStation and Xbox mascots to 3rd party IPs; successful shows; anime; athletes and artists. Despite this, one major omission has been Nintendo characters. Though rumours suggesting that Samus Aran would come to Fortnite appeared back in 2021, this never ended up happening – with the ex-head of Fortnite himself now revealing why.
In an exclusive interview with ex-Epic Games CCO and Fortnite lead Donald Mustard – conducted by Stephen Totillo (and shared by Fortnite leaker Shiina) – Epic Games was indeed in talks with Nintendo to bring some of its characters into the game, more specifically Samus Aran of Metroid fame.
Unfortunately, the reason these talks never amounted to anything is due to the fact that according to Mustard, Nintendo would only allow the collaboration as long as the Samus skin remained exclusive to the Switch.
Not only that, but all other players would not even be able to view the skin unless they themselves are also on a Nintendo device.
Quite understandably, Epic Games refused the proposal, leaving us where we are today, with all other systems being represented except for Nintendo. As Fortnite continues to grow further, it will be interesting to see whether Nintendo’s stance ever changes.
