Fake ‘Samsung 1080 Pro’ M.2 SSDs are being sold online

We've seen plenty of fake PC hardware being sold at cheap prices over the years. For a time, storage products like USB sticks were a prime culprit. Now, we're seeing fake Samsung M.2 SSDs being sold, with one brave soul buying one for science.

Korean news site, Quasarzone, picked up a fake Samsung 1080 Pro M.2 SSD online. The listing has a few telltale signs of a scam, with contradictory specification information and an absurdly cheap sub-$50 price tag for the 4TB drive.

In testing, this fake drive would slow down to 2MB/s after reaching just 3 percent of its capacity. The drive also came equipped with a 96-layer NAND chip and support for PCIe Gen 3. Speeds in other tests reflected this, with the drive failing to live up to the previous generation Samsung 900-series SSD.

It just goes to show that if you are ever tempted to pick up a suspected fake drive for potentially high-capacity at a low price, the performance will make it nearly unusable.
