Apple warns customers against using non-Apple cloths to clean Pro Display XDR

The incredibly high-spec and incredibly expensive Apple Pro Display XDR is officially on sale. If you want the top-end version with ‘nano-texture glass', you are going to be served with a $6,000 bill. You will need to be careful when cleaning the display though, as Apple says you can only use its own cloth to avoid damaging the screen coating.

Dust and smudges naturally end up on our screens from time to time. When it comes to cleaning the Pro Display XDR with nano-texture glass, Apple advises customers to “never use any other cloths” to clean it, aside from the dry polishing cloth that comes with the display. If you lose that cloth, you can contact Apple for a replacement, but you can only do so through customer support, so the pricing of the cloth isn't readily available. Considering the Pro Display XDR stand is $999 and the VESA mount is $199, the cloth likely costs more than any of us would expect.

Aside from sticking to Apple's own cleaning cloth, you also should not add water or other liquids when cleaning the nano-texture glass display. When it comes to cleaning the cloth however, you should use soap and water, rinse thoroughly and then leave to air dry for at least 24 hours.

What makes the nano-texture glass so special? The glass is etched at the nanometer level in order to reduce reflections and maintain contrast across the matte finish. It will be interesting to eventually see how much that cleaning cloth costs and how long the coating lasts without wearing off.

KitGuru Says: The Pro Display XDR is an incredibly impressive monitor but there does seem to be a lot of added cost outside of the monitor itself. It is only a matter of time before the cost of that cloth becomes publicly known, how much do you reckon it will end up being?
