Intel releases the new SSD 665p series

Intel has launched its second generation QLC 3D NAND SSDs, succeeding the 660p series with the 665p series. The new Intel SSD 665p series is the “first 96-layer QLC-based PCIe SSD” to be manufactured.

The 665p series comes with in a 1TB or 2TB capacity, offering “great value for everyday computing and mainstream gaming and content creation” according to Intel. This drive comes with a PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 interface in an M.2 80mm form factor, making it compatible with most modern notebooks and desktops.

When compared to the previous 660p series, the 665p offers +11.1% better sequential 128KB read speed, with a theoretical limit of up to 2000MB/s, and up to +11.1% better sequential 128KB write speed, with speeds up to 2000 MB/s as well. Regarding random 4K read/write speeds, it can reach up to 250K IOPS for both, meaning there's an improvement of up to 13.6% when compared to the first generation. The endurance rating was also improved by 1.5x versus the 660p.

The controller used in the 665p is the same as the one used in the 660p, the Silicon Motion SM2263, paired with a small amount of DRAM cache and an enormous chunk of dynamically allocated SLC cache. The dynamic SLC cache size varies as the drive capacity is used. When up to 50% of the drive's capacity has been used, the SLC cache operated at its maximum size (280GB for the 2TB version and 140GB for the 1TB version). As the used drive capacity goes over 50%, the SLC cache diminishes to ≅8.6% of the maximum cache size (24GB and 12GB, respectively).

There's no pricing for both versions yet, but according to Intel, the 1TB version is already available. The 2TB version will arrive by Q1 2020. Both versions come with a 5-year warranty.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
