Comet Lake-S CPUs and Z490 motherboards rumoured for release in April 2020

A new leak regarding the release date of Comet Lake-S CPUs and Z490 motherboards has been revealed. According to industry insiders, the upcoming Intel CPUs and respective motherboards will release in April 2020. Like any other rumour, this should be taken with a grain of salt.

As usual, while the Z490 chipset will spearhead the Comet Lake-S release, it's expected that other chipsets will be later available: the W480, the B460, and the H410. The 400-series platform seems to be very similar to the current 300-series platform, but there are some new features while others were improve, including:

  • Up To 10 processor cores
  • Up To 30 PCH-H I/O lanes for port flexibility
  • Up To 40 PCIe 3.0 Lanes (16 CPU, up to 24 PCH)
  • Integrated + Discrete Intel Wireless-AC (Wi-Fi/BT CNVi) Support
  • Intel Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+) Support
  • Enhanced Core and memory overclock
  • Integrated USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 (10 Gb/s) support
  • Programmable (Open FW SDK) Quad-Core Audio DSP
  • C10 & S0ix Support for Modern Standby
  • New LGA1200 socket with improved power delivery

Although the upcoming LGA1200 socket has the same dimensions as the currently used LGA1151, there will be no backward compatibility because the LGA1200 socket “keying has shifted to the left side”. Fortunately, this won't change the coolers' compatibility, as the thermal solution retention is the same. This new socket also comes with a higher pin-count package.

Regarding the upcoming CPUs, it looks like that HyperThreading will be a standard – the Core i3 will be 4C/8T, the Core i5 will carry 6C/12T, the Core i7 will have 8C/16T, and the Core i9 will boast 10C/20T.

If the leaked release date is correct, maybe there will be more information about the Comet Lake-S platform at CES 2020 in January.
