Qualcomm announces the 7c and 8c SoCs for Windows laptops

After the recent announcement of the Snapdragon 865, Qualcomm has unveiled its new 7c and 8c SOCs to the public. These SoCs will be joining the 8cx and will be used on premium, mainstream and entry-level notebook PCs.

With these three products, Qualcomm is covering all “price points allowing partners to design always on, always connected PCs for a wide array of consumers.”

The Snapdragon 7c SoC is an octa-core platform aimed at entry-level devices, with 8x Kryo 468 cores, clocked up to 2.4GHz, an Adreno 618 GPU and an X15 LTE modem. The embedded Qualcomm AI Engine in the Snapdragon 7c can deliver up to 5 TOPs (trillion operations per seconds). All of these specifications translate into a 25% increase in system performance and “up to twice the battery life vs competing platforms.” This SoC is based on the 8nm process node from Samsung.

Based on the currently available 8cx, the Snapdragon 8c is an octa-core SoC that will also use a 7nm process node. With 4x Kryo 490 Gold and 4x Kryo 490 Silver, clocked up to 2.45GHz, an Adreno 675 GPU and an X24 LTE modem, this chip will deliver an increase in “performance up to 30% over the Snapdragon 850”. Unlike the 7c platform, the 8c can be paired with an X55 5G modem. Made for mainstream use, the Snapdragon 8c comes with a Qualcomm AI Engine that can reach up to 6 TOPs.

Both SoCs should be released on devices by 2020 according to Anandtech.
