Control could be coming to Xbox Game Pass but not until next year

Xbox Game Pass has gone on to become one of the best value services in gaming today. Typically, which games are coming to the Game Pass library are kept under heavy wraps to avoid impacting sales but in the case of Remedy’s Control, it looks like Xbox head, Phil Spencer, may have let the cat out of the bag early.

During an Extra Life charity stream this week, Phil Spencer mentioned Control as a great game that just “didn’t reach enough people”. Due to that lower reach, Spencer added that he is glad to see the game join Xbox Game Pass to overcome that problem. Of course, Control hasn’t actually been officially announced for Game Pass yet, so this comment from Spencer sent PR teams into a bit of a tailspin, with Remedy swiftly brushing this off as incorrect news and Microsoft’s own PR team doing the same.

So is Control coming to Xbox Game Pass? Despite recent denials, the game does seem like a prime candidate, although we likely weren’t supposed to hear about it until early 2020. Right now, Control is enjoying steady post-launch sales and we are just a few weeks away from Christmas. If the game was confirmed for Game Pass this early, then it could have an impact on holiday sales not just for Xbox One, but potentially for PC too as Game Pass is available on both platforms.

Control is also currently in the running for Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards, which could also help bring a good boost to end of year sales. Assuming Phil Spencer’s early confirmation didn’t tank the deal, it stands to reason that we might hear about Control coming to Game Pass once again after entering the new year.

KitGuru Says: Control has been one of my favourite games of the year, so I’m hoping more people give the game a shot. The game won’t be coming to Game Pass this month, but Control does seem like a prime candidate to join the library early next year- we just won’t be getting any confirmation on that until after the holiday season.
