Nintendo is now taking down Steam Workshop content for Garry’s Mod

Nintendo has made plenty of headlines recently, having successfully shut down the popular Switch emulator, Yuzu, earlier this year. Now, Nintendo is turning its attention to copyrighted mods, aiming for the removal of hundreds of Steam Workshop items for the game Garry's Mod.

Garry's Mod is two decades old at this point, but the game has evolved a lot in that time span, in large part thanks to thousands of mods and custom game modes. Naturally, some have made mods featuring Nintendo characters, such as character models. Plenty of these can be found for Garry's Mod, including models and content based off of other copyrighted characters.

In an update on Steam, Garry confirmed that the recent removal of some Steam Workshop items was at the request of Nintendo. Now, Garry is seeking the help of mod authors to remove Nintendo-related content to make the process easier, writing in a Steam update:

“Some of you may have noticed that certain Nintendo related workshop items have recently been taken down. This is not a mistake, the takedowns came from Nintendo. Honestly, this is fair enough. This is Nintendo's content and what they allow and don't allow is up to them. They don't want you playing with that stuff in Garry's Mod – that's their decision, we have to respect that and take down as much as we can. This is an ongoing process, as we have 20 years of uploads to go through. If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot.”

In true Garry fashion, there is some sarcasm there. Many of these mods are going to get removed either way, whether mod creators play along or not.

KitGuru Says: Garry's Mod has existed for 20 years with little in the way of copyright problems. That was bound to change eventually.
