BlizzCon has been cancelled again this year

BlizzCon made its grand return in 2023, after a four year hiatus. Unfortunately, it looks like the event is on the ropes once again, with plans for BlizzCon 2024 being scrapped.

BlizzCon is by no means a cheap event to run, but it has been a core part of the company's identity for years. The event went on hiatus in 2019, after a poorly received BlizzCon in 2018. Immediately after that, the pandemic happened, which caused further BlizzCon cancellations in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Last year, BlizzCon finally returned as an in-person event, and as a whole, the event was better received than 2018, with World of Warcraft: The War Within being the biggest announcement.

Now in an update posted this week, Blizzard has confirmed that it will not be holding BlizzCon 2024, although the event is still set to return “in future years”. Chances are, Blizzard didn't have enough to announce/show to make the event a worthwhile endeavour this time around.

This year, Blizzard has three major releases that we know of so far – World of Warcraft: The War Within, WoW Classic: Cataclysm and Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred. Cataclysm Classic is coming out in May, while the next expansions for World of Warcraft and Diablo 4 are expected towards the end of the year.

KitGuru Says: BlizzCon doesn't need to be an annual event, but if Blizzard does indeed plan on hosting the event again in the future, getting back to some kind of expected schedule would be nice.
