Sales for PS5 exclusive Rise of the Ronin are “surpassing the Nioh series”

Team Ninja have had a pretty close relationship with Sony over the years, developing console exclusives Nioh and its sequel Nioh 2 – both of which were published by PlayStation. Their latest release – Rise of the Ronin – has been out now for just over a month, and according to publisher Koei Tecmo “sales are surpassing the Nioh series.”

Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin released a little over a month ago now, dropping onto PS5 on the 22nd of March to a welcoming reception from both fans and critics alike (landing at an 87 from fans and 76 from reviewers according to Metacritic).

While we have yet to get any concrete sales figures, publisher Koei Tecmo recently revealed as part of their latest fiscal report that “sales are surpassing the ‘Nioh’ series, high valuation by players.”

For context, while we do not have exact 1:1 comparisons, 2017’s Nioh managed to sell over 1 million units within its first two weeks on the market. Unfortunately, we have less information on Nioh 2, with the earliest sales reports revealing that it had sold 2 million copies in its first year.

Regardless of what the actual figure is, it’s impressive to see another successful new IP coming out from the PlayStation / Team Ninja partnership. It’ll be interesting to see how this evolves over time.
