Following on from numerous leaks in recent weeks, Activision has now officially announced this year's Call of Duty. As you would expect, previous leaks were indeed accurate, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 set to release this year.
While it was no secret that there would be a new Call of Duty game this year, it is an annual franchise after all, there are several sub-series in the franchise. Typically, we know when to expect a new game from Treyarch, Infinity Ward or Sledgehammer, but in recent years, Treyarch had to be pulled in to save struggling projects, like Black Ops: Cold War, which was initially supposed to be a different game entirely, developed by Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software.
Despite those issues, Treyarch has had some extra time to work on its next Call of Duty game. Infinity Ward took over again in 2022 with Modern Warfare 2, which was then followed up by Sledgehammer's Modern Warfare 3 in 2023. Now in 2024, we're giving Modern Warfare a break and going back to Black Ops.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is expected to have its gameplay reveal in June, as part of the Xbox Games Showcase. The game will have some beta tests leading up to the launch.
Typically, Call of Duty launches in the October-November timeframe each year. That won't be changing this year either – Black Ops 6 is expected to launch around October 25th.
