Typically whenever Nintendo is asked about its next-gen console plans, the company simply states that it is always exploring new opportunities but that there are ‘no immediate plans' for a new system. That has finally changed this week, with Nintendo acknowledging plans to announce a new console for the first time.
We've been hearing for months that a Switch 2 is on the way, with a redesigned handheld system, dock and controllers. Recent rumours have suggested that Nintendo is targeting an early 2025 launch for the new console and recent statements from Nintendo leadership point to exactly that.
“This is Furukawa, the president of Nintendo. We will be announcing the successor to the Switch during this fiscal year for the first time in nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in March 2015”, Nintendo shared on Twitter.
Interestingly, this same announcement was also used to spread news about the next Nintendo Direct, which is taking place in June. However, this stream is expected to focus on titles for the current-gen Switch, rather than being all about next-gen.
