PassMark’s new PerformanceTest v10 heavily favours Intel processors

With the PassMark PerformanceTest v9, most of the top single-threaded performance scores were from AMD processors. Now, with the release of the latest version of PerformanceTest v10, the top 34 places for single-threaded performance are held by Intel CPUs, and in the 35th position, there's the Ryzen 3 4300U as the top AMD processor.

As seen from this table looking at PassMark PerformanceTest v9 scores, when ordered with highest Thread Rating scores at the top, most top scorers are from AMD, with Ryzen 7 PRO 3700 in an outright lead with a score of 3027. On the other hand, the top scoring processor from Intel is in the 3rd position, specifically the Intel Core i9-9900KS with a score of 2992.

Now, in the latest release of PassMark PerformanceTest v10, the current top scorer on PassMark PerformanceTest v10 is the Intel Core i9-9900KS, with a score of 3071. The following 34 scorers are also from Intel, and the top AMD scorer is the latest mobile Ryzen 3 processor.

According to Notebookcheck, “there have been a few accusations” (via Reddit, Twitter) of Intel bribing PassMark because the benchmark is now using the AVX512 instruction set, but PassMark has dismissed that allegation. According to David, managing director at PassMark, the benchmark development team should have “scaled down the PT10 single-threaded result to match the PT9 results”. It was also stated that in the coming weeks, the values should better represent the single-threaded performance of each processor as more samples are added to the scores, and as the benchmark is patched.

After sending a portion of the code to AMD, the CPU manufacturer informed David that the data compression test was the most detrimental to the AMD 3000 series. PassMark analysed that same portion of code and concluded that “it was spending an unexpected large portion of its time generating random data to be compressed”.

Yesterday, the PassMark Performance Test 10.1004 build was released, fixing the data compression test. According to a new post from David, there have been multiple increases in the results. In comparison with the previous PT10 build (10.1003) the AMD Ryzen 9 3900's score increased by 19.5%, from 2529 to 3022, and the Ryzen TR 3970X's score also increased by almost 20%, from 2500 to 2997.
