Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 becomes one of the best selling fighting games this generation

The Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series of fighting games have always offered fans of the anime a new way to experience its story. Developers CyberConnect2, who were responsible for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, recently announced ahead of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4’s launch on the Nintendo Switch in April, that the game had sold 5.8 million copies making it one of the best selling fighting games this entire generation.

Announced during its livestream (and reported by MysticGon on Resetera), Cyberconnect2 confirmed that Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 had sold 5.8 million copies. Released in 2016, the game is the most recent in the series, and follows the conclusion of the long-running anime. Though no games in the series have been released since, the game saw an enhanced re-release titled Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Road to Boruto, which includes the game’s DLC and expansion packs.

Even though the game released over 4 years ago, 5.8 million copies sold is still incredibly impressive, and puts the fighter as one of the best selling of the generation. The best selling fighting game this generation is by far Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with over 17 million copies sold. Following that is Mortal Kombat X, which sold 11 million copies. From this point on, the figures get hazy. Tekken 7 was last reported to have sold 5 million copies as of the end of 2019, and Mortal Kombat 11 – though no sales figures have been provided – was the 5th best selling game in the US in 2019.

Still, regardless of where Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 rests, it is undoubtedly an incredibly successful game, and has helped push sales of the Ultimate Ninja Storm series to over 20 million. With the game arriving on Switch on the 24th of April, it’ll be interesting to see just how far the game can go sales wise and whether – despite concluding the story of the anime – the series will see a 5th game at some point.
